Refund Form (PS Form 3533, August 1999)
Application and Voucher for Refund of Postage, Fees and Services

We all make mistakes, but that’s because we are thinkers and doers and when working hard, it’s to be expected. Those that are not moving and doing will not have an opportunity, like the rest of us, to make a mistake or two, so they don’t have to read any further.

We realize that we want to keep our mistakes to a minimum, but unfortunately with today's fast pace, mistakes happen.  And when they do while metering your mail, there's something you can do about it.  This refund is meant as a “Now-A-Days” fix for these hectic times when you've accidentally put too much postage on your metered letters and packages, or pieces just don’t get sent for one reason or another.  What do you do with a bunch of envelopes or metered tapes that need to be accounted for?  Get 90% of that wasted postage back.

Whether fault of the operator or the machine, fill out the refund form found here, print it and take the form, along with the mail, to your local Post Office, and submit it to the window clerk.  The form asks for your name, address and other particulars.  If you have a large amount of wasted postage or are unsure of how to fill out the form, call ahead and talk to a representative before taking the trip.  They will be more than happy to assist you with filling out the form.

This service is for both small and large volumes of mail, but it is a good idea to keep the paperwork to a minimum by tallying up refunds once or twice a month, depending upon the load.  The timeframe for holding errors is 30 days.  This expiration period should dictate how many pieces you may have for refund per form.

Note - “The customer’s meter must be licensed at the refunding office, and legible unused meter stamps must not be over 30 days old. Refund meter stamps at 90% of face value if face value is $250 or less. If face value is more than $250, refund is face value minus a $10 per hour fee for processing the refund; the minimum charge is $25.” (ALWAYS CHECK FOR UPDATED PRICING)

Also note that the form is also for refunds other than badly metered mail. It’s for Special Services, Late Delivered Expedited Services, and Value-Added Services & Meter tapes not used. Remember: We all make mistakes, don’t hide it or just throw out the bad postage. This could add up to some big savings for you.  Get a refund when applicable.
